Retrospective Section of 17TH International Film Festival of Kerala showcases Akira Kurosawa’s nine famous works including his 1943 debut work, Sanshiro Sugata. The Kurosawa package will include Drunken Angel, It is notable for being the first of sixteen film collaborations between director Kurosawa and actor Toshirō Mifune. The other movies in the Kurosawa package are The Hidden Fortress’ with Toshirô Mifune, Misa Uehara and Minoru Chiaki in leading roles. This film won Silver Bear for Best Director in the Berlin International Film Festival in 1959. Ikkuru , made in 1952 , is another classic included in the retro. Kurosawa made this film when he was 42 .Takashi Shimura(recall the wood cutter in Rashomon ) a favourate actor of Kurasawa did the role of the mortally ill bureaucrat in Ikiru . It came right after "Rashomon" (1951) and "The Idiot" (1952), which also starred Shimura. Takashi Shimura and Toshiro Mifune were two all-time favorite actors in Kurosawa films.
