53rd International Film Festival (IFFI 2022)- ended with Jury head Nadav Lapid criticised Vivek Agnihotri's Hindi film The Kashmir Files calling it 'propaganda'
The 53rd International Film Festival of India ended with some controversial comments on Monday. At the closing ceremony, jury head, Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid criticised Vivek Agnihotri's Hindi film The Kashmir Files on stage, calling it 'propaganda'.(Canadian film maker says 'hate mongering garbage'.The Kashmir Files will be 'embarrassment to India' if sent to Oscars). In his address to the audience, Nadav said, “We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film: The Kashmir Files. That felt to us like propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel totally comfortable to share openly these feelings here with you on stage. Since the spirit of having a festival is to accept also a critical discussion which is essential for art and for life.”The Kashmir Files was also screened at the festival last week. Kashmir Files is helmed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. The film, which was released in theatres on March 11, revolves around the killings and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 from the valley. While the film was a hit in India, many have criticised it as well for its alleged propagandist tone.Singapore even banned the film assessing it to be “beyond” the city-state's film classification guidelines. According to reports, the Singaporean authorities refused classification of the Hindi-language film for “its provocative and one-sided portrayal of Muslims and the depictions of Hindus being persecuted in the on-going conflict in Kashmir”.The Vivek Agnihotri-directed film stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi in lead roles. In India, the movie has been lauded by the ruling camp, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah coming forward to shower praise on the performances and the content. The film was also declared tax-free in most of the BJP-ruled states. (News courtesy:Hindustan Times)

“Dhabari Quruvi” had its world premiere in the Indian Panorama section at 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa.
“Dhabari Quruvi” portrays the tempestuous journey of a tribal girl who battles convention and seeks to free herself from the chains with which society and community had tied down those like her. Distinguished as the first film in the history of Indian cinema to star only people from indigenous communities, The film also has the distinction of having been shot completely in the tribal language of Irula. Director Priyanandan while interacting with the media and festival delegates at one of the “Table Talks” sessions being organized by PIB on the side-lines of the festival shared his sincere wish to make a change in the lives of young tribal girls who have forgotten to stand for themselves accepting the norm of “fate” set on them by their community. “Using cinema as a medium, my attempt is to stand for a cause,” Priyanandan, the National Award-winning filmmaker said. Talking about his movie, Priyanandan said it deals with a contemporary issue about people who are side-lined, about those unwed mothers in a tribal community in Kerala. “They are living by accepting this ordeal as their fate without making a single attempt to come out of that,” he told. The film depicts the story of a naive tribal girl who rises from the ashes to proclaim the solitary right she has, on her body and the decisions upon it. Mythologically, Dhabari Quruvi is a sparrow from a folklore tale whose father remains unknown. Sharing his notions on marginalizing a place, its people, and how they are being mocked by the mainstream, Priyanandan said through his film he wants to change that perception too. On using cinema as a medium for social change, Priyanandan said his idea of cinema is that it is not just for entertainment. “It can be used for making the change in the lives of people whom we have”t even met.”The actors from tribal communities were selected from an acting workshop conducted at Attappadi in which around 150 people participated. Asked about the challenges in working with these first-time actors, “There is an artist inside every human. I never asked them to act, they just behaved as themselves. They were just living the ordeals in their real life”.
While throwing light on the issues being faced by tribal people Priyanandan said there are no efforts to bring them to the mainstream. “Though there is no dearth of funds, those people are still facing numerous issues. He opined that there needs to be an effort to understand them from their perspective and formulate policies based on that.”More than sixty people, belonging to Irula, Muduka, Kurumba, and Vaduka tribal communities of Attappadi, a scheduled tribe hamlet in the southern Indian state of Kerala have acted in the movie. “Quite a few of them had not ever seen a film in their entire life,” the Director told.
Thanking IFFI for giving a great platform for its world premiere, Priyanandan said he is planning to screen the movie in all the tribal hamlets to gain the desired goal. Meenakshi and Shyamini who played the main characters in the film and Cinematographer Aswaghoshan were also in attendance at the media interaction. The cast also includes Anuprasobhini and Muruki and Nanjiyamma, the tribal woman from Attappady who got the 68th National Film Award for Best Female Singer last year. ( Courtesy: PIB)

53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI)-Gamperaliya to Maariya: The Ocean Angel
53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI).The journey of Sreelankan films started with ‘Gamperaliya’(1963) by Lester James Peries and reached Maariya: The Ocean Angel” directed by Aruna Jayawardhana in 2022 which is competing for Golden Peacock.
"1901 marked the introduction of cinema to Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon), with a film being shown for the first time in the country at a private screening for the British governor West Ridgeway and prisoners of the Second Boer War. It was a short film that documented the British victory in the Boer War, the burial of Queen Victoria and the coronation of Edward VII. From the shadows of colonialism, the entertainment industry in the small island country with a population of around 22 million has come a long way. Cinema in Sri Lanka has now become a public affair and a celebration of culture.
In the 53rd edition of IFFI, “Maariya:The Ocean Angel” (2022) directed by Aruna Jayawardhana is competing for the coveted golden peacock under the International Competition category. The film revolves around a group of fishermen in the middle of the ocean and an accidental discovery they make. Is it divine intervention? Or will this only allow them to see themselves and each other in different light? Maariya: The Ocean Angel explores these dynamics and more as it journeys in the oceans with the young lads.
The First Golden Peacock Award for a Feature Film at IFFI was presented for the film ‘Gamperaliya’(1963) by Lester James Peries, who is considered to be the Father of Sri Lankan Cinema. Will history repeat itself at the 53rd edition? We will soon find out! But until then get ready to set sail on a cinematic adventure and don’t miss out on the screening of Maariya: The Ocean Angel" (Courtesy :P.I.B)

Tokyo International Film Festival 2022 -Rodrigo Sorogoyen's Spanish film 'The Beasts' won the Grand Prix for best film and best director ,best actor awards.
Best Director,Rodrigo Sorogoyen
Best Actor,Denis Menochet
Spanish rural thriller, The Beasts won three top awards including the grand Prix for best film, best director award to Sorogoyen and best actor award to Denis Menochet. best director honors for Sorogoyen and best actor for his star Denis Menochet.
A brooding, psychological thriller set in rural Spain, The Beasts tells the story of a cosmopolitan French couple, Antoine and Olga (Menochet and actress Marina Foïs), who settle in a small village hoping to connect with nature. Instead, their presence soon arouses hostility — and eventually, downright violence — from some of the locals. The film has been praised for its feral, even savage, portrayal of the hardscrabble realities of the majestic Galician countryside.
The Tokyo Grand Prix includes a cash prize of Three million yen, while the director and the actor will receive 300,000 yen each. The Festival’s Special Jury Prize of 500,000 yen was given to Houman Seyedi’s Iranian drama, World war III, which tells the tale of a poor laborer, played by Mohsen Tanabandeh (A Hero). He works on a movie set, where a film condemning dictators is being shot. But he soon finds that the moviemakers themselves turn tyrannical. World War III ends in a horrific tragedy.
